Grupo Academia Balança is founded by mestre Gildo Valu. Academia Balança was one of the first capoeira schools in the Netherlands.

Mestre Valu is originally from Brazil, Salvador Bahia, the place where capoeira was developed. In 1986 Valu came to the Netherlands to start capoeira schools in the Netherlands. The first school named Mercado modelo, named after the wellknown market square in Salvador Bahia, where capoeira is played every day.

Academia Balança has schools in Brazil, the Netherlands and the United States. Since january Academia Balança started a academia in Gambia.
